May    9    #1454    CANCELLED MERCK FOREST HIKE    Ray Bouchard    893-7314    After visiting the farm (several lambs and piglets were born recently and should be at that cute stage)    plan on hiking up Mt. Antone followed by some of the interior trails for a total distance of 6-8 miles and ~2000’ elevation change.      The area is typical rural Vermont countryside so there is very little level ground but nothing terribly steep either.  North Country people should plan on departing the WCMC at 8:30 for the primary meeting place of Dick’s parking lot (left of store entrance) at Wilton Mall, Exit 15, for a 9:00 departure, making a brief stop at the Greenwich McDonald’s at ~9:30.    If someone offers to lead the WCMC group via a northern route the WCMC departure time would change – will notify by email.
**Ray's original and complete trip descriptionMerck Forest & Farmland Center is located in Rupert, VT., about an hour drive from Exit 15.  I expect to visit the farm area first to see the animals, which typically includes chickens, pigs, sheep and horses.  Several lambs and piglets were born around 3/22 so they should still be at that cute stage.  After visiting the farm (elevation ~1800’) I plan on hiking up Mt. Antone (elevation 2600 ft.) followed by some of the interior trails for a total distance of 6 – 8 miles and about two thousand feet elevation change.   The area is typical rural Vermont countryside so there is very little level ground but nothing terribly steep either.   Feel free to come even if you would just like to visit the farm and walk around the area on your own.   North Country folks should meet at WCMC at 8:15 with a departure time of 8:30.   This group will drive south to Exit 15 and meet me at the outer parking area of Dick’s Sporting Goods Store (Wilton Mall, Rt.-50).   We will depart Dick’s at 9:00; make a brief stop at McDonald’s Restaurant in Greenwich at approx. 9:30 and arrive at Merck around 10:00.   Note: I might bump the WCMC departure time to 9:00 if someone in that area offers to lead the group to Merck via a shorter, northern route.  I’ll include that in a last minute update email if there is a change.

May    16    #1455    LAKE GEORGE BIKE PATH    Ken Gericke    683-8420    This trip begins at the Warren County Bike Path parking lot on Country Club Rd. From Northway exit 19, travel east on Aviation Rd, cross Rt 9, continue for ½ mile, then turn left onto Country Club Rd.    Parking is on left just after crossing bike path. We bike to Lake George Village, where we have lunch, and then return for a total of 15 miles. Meet at Country Club Rd parking lot at 9:45.

May    23    #1456    CANCELLED DIPPIKILL HIKE    Nancy Kimball and Don McMahon (co-leaders)    668-0115    Dippikill is a wilderness retreat facility owned by the Student Association of the University at Albany with a number of hiking trails. We will walk a ridge to a lookout over the Hudson River and descend to a lean-to at a pond. Total distance is about 4 miles with ~400' elevation change. WCMC* or meet at the Dippikill Parking lot at 10:00.

May    30    #1457    PROSPECT ROCK HIKE    Kurt Wisell    796-1993    The trail starts at the end of Rootville Road in Manchester, VT and goes along the Downer Glen Ravine on a US Forest Service road and meets up with the Appalachian/Long Trail where a spur on the right leads 100' west to Prospect Rock. From Prospect Rock is a fine view of Manchester, Mount Equinox (tallest of the Taconics),  Little Equinox, Beartown Notch and Mother Myrick Mountain. Three miles RT, 960' vertical.  This is an easy and very pretty walk.    Departing separately from both WCMC and Dick’s parking lot at Wilton Mall (left of store entrance) at 9:15.
**--Getting There:   Tom Gibbs will be meeting those who wish to meet in Saratoga at Dick’s parking lot at Wilton Mall (left of store entrance) at 9:15.  I will be meeting folks wishing to depart from WCMC at 9.15.  After departing Dick's and WCMC, since there is VERY limited parking at the Prospect Rock trail head, we will all meet at Manchester Woodcraft in Manchester, directions below, see how few cars we can manage and proceed from there.  For everyone's relief, there is a McDonalds directly across the street from Manchester Woodcraft.
--There's Life After Prospect:   Since Prospect, round trip, is only about 3 quite easy miles, some of us may feel the need for more to do in Manchester.  There is lots of shopping but my idea of a good time is to hike some more on easy to moderate terrain with nice scenery and a pond, close to the Prospect trail head in a place the Canes have not gone before, at least as a group.  The Equinox Preserve perfectly fits the need.  The Equinox Preservation Trust has created an exceptional network of well marked, well manicured trails serving a broad spectrum of abilities and interests. There is something for everyone 12 months a year.  Once there we'll see how energetic we feel but I'm thinking about a loop with a 600 foot change in elevation and 2.28 miles.
--Trail and Bug Considerations: Generally speaking, we should encounter US Forest Service road and well maintained trails without a lot of wet or muddy going, subject to weather. Be prepared as would be appropriate for a spring day in the Adirondacks.  As for bugs, I was raised in Manchester and have never in my life encountered a flying insect there.  Some energetic NY black flies may follow us over to Vermont, so be prepared for them.  It is after all black fly season.
--Directions to Manchester Woodcraft:
From Malfunction Junction in Manchester Center (adjacent to Hand Chevrolet, the Mill Pond and a small park, it'sthe new roundabout at the intersection of Routes 7A, 11 and 30 South), go east for .17 mile on 11 & 30 to a sizeable grey building on the left with a sign by the road that says "Manchester Woodcraft."  McDonalds will be on your right. Park in back of the building.
--Directions to Equinox Preserve From Manchester Woodcraft: Go west back to Malfunction Junction, turn right (south)on Route 7A for 1.2 miles (Mark Skinner Library will be on the right), turn right onto Seminary Avenue for .34 miles (the road makes a sharp left turn at Burr & Burton Academy), turn right on West Union Street for .2 miles and the Equinox Preserve parking area will be on your right, well signed.

June    6    #13.1458    BERRYMILL POND HIKE    Karen Burka    494-2217    Berrymill Pond from the South – From the parking lot off West Hague road we will follow yellow markers for a short distance to the main trail with blue markers.  During the first 2 miles we will gain ~700’ to the height of land and continue for ~1 mile, with a slight descent, to the short spur trail to the shore of the lake.  WCMC at 8:45, or meet at the Horicon Community Center at 9:30 - Northway to Exit 25, right onto Rt 8 easterly for 1.7 miles making a right at the Community Center entrance.  Park behind the building at the west end of the lot.

June    13    #1459    GULL BAY/LAST GREAT SHORELINE HIKE    Lenore and Jack    587-6161    These Preserves are owned by the Lake George Land Conservancy and are located on the eastern shore of Lake George in the Town of Putnam.    We will first visit the Gull Bay Preserve and explore up to 2 miles of trails including a view of the Great Blue Heron Rookery from the orange trail.    We then drive to the Last Great Shoreline Preserve where we will explore its two hiking trails, including two overlooks of Lake George, for a total of ~ 2.5 miles.    This is the first time that this outing has been offered so please join us and don’t forget to bring your camera and binoculars.    Depending on the time and the group’s interest we may offer an additional hike to either Mt Defiance or explore part of the LaChute River Walk Trail both in Ticonderoga.    This will add some additional driving time and hiking for the day.    WCMC*
**Lenore & Jack's original text: This is the first time this outing has been offered as a Canes event.  Despite a plan to scout the trails of both preserves ahead of time we may need to make changes the day of the hike depending on the weather.  A portion of the trail system at the Gull Bay Preserve travels through wetlands and may be impassable if there was a recent rain.  In addition, the yellow trail of the Gull Bay preserve is in close proximity to the Blue Heron Rookery and may be closed.  This will require us to hike the orange trail as an out and back hike rather than a loop hike.
Revised Information Current As Of 5/19: Lenore and Jack's Scouting Report From May 19:  We had a great day yesterday with the kids. We joined a LGLC guide for about 4.5 hour walk at the Gull Bay Rookery. The bad news - there are no herons there. Apparently the numbers have been in decline, possibly due to osprey nesting nearby. The good news - this is a really pretty hike with wildflowers and a very large beaver dam that we can walk on. There is also a very steep route up and down some ledges that provide a view of the swamp, not on the map yet. The beavers were quite aggressive, swimming close to us, slapping their tails, and providing a 20 minute show. So, we are thinking that because this hike is longer than we thought, and it's about 1 hour from WCMC, this should be the bulk of the event. Leave WCMC at 9:30, arrive about 10:30, hike until about 2:30. Folks who wanted to go home could return to WCMC and call it day.
After the Gull Bay hike, we drove to, and up, Mount Defiance. We couldn't find a trail head, the kids were tired, and we didn't want to hike up the boring, hot road. The view at the top was cool. I've taught the battles at Fort Ti, but never realized until yesterday how far the cannons had to shoot to reach the fort.
We then walked about half of the LaChute Riverwalk in TIconderoga, after ice cream at Stewart's, of course! This is a pretty neat blacktopped path, if a bit care worn. We could park at Bicentennial Park and walk toward the beginning, maybe 2 miles rt. Folks who joined us for this would return home via Route 74 and Exit 28, which is a faster way to WCMC from Ticonderoga than Route 22 and 149. If we finish Gull Bay later than we think, we can opt to skip this."

June    20    #1460    CEDAR RIVER FLOW PADDLE    Ray Bouchard    893-7314    From Wakely Dam we will paddle the length of the Flow, continuing upstream on the Cedar River for an additional mile to a lean-to where we will have lunch and then return for a total distance of 9-10 miles.  The pace will be leisurely, so we’ll have plenty of time to explore the shoreline and look for wildlife.    The flow is home to waterfowl and other birds so bring your binoculars and camera – who knows, we may even see a moose.    The drive is a little longer than we are used to so we will depart from the WCMC at 8:30, with a brief stop at the Town of Johnsburg Court House in Wevertown at 9:00 and a pit stop at Stewart’s in Indian Lake at 10:00.    The last 10 miles is on an unimproved dirt road.
**The Cedar River and associated Flow (lake) is located in the Moose River Plains Wild Forest Area near Indian Lake.   We will launch at Wakely Dam and paddle the length of the Flow until we reach the junction of the lean-to and the Northville-Lake Placid Trail near the Cedar River.   This will serve as our lunch spot and turn around point.   The round trip distance is about 9 - 10 miles, but folks are welcome to come along and just paddle the Flow on their own, hopefully with a friend or two.  The pace will be leisurely, so we’ll have plenty of time to explore the shoreline and watch the wildlife.   Wind, when it does blow, tends to follow the length of the Flow so it can be an issue, especially if you are paddling a tandem canoe with high sides.   Solo canoes and kayaks should fare well.   In the past I have seen loons, Canada geese, osprey and ducks so bring your binoculars and your camera.   Because of the long drive and the length of the paddle I would like to meet the main group at WCMC at 8:15 with a departure time of 8:30.   This will be followed by a brief stop at the Wevertown Town Hall at 9:00 and a pit stop at the Stewart’s Shop in Indian Lake around 10:00.   Please note that the last 10 miles or so of the trip is on a dirt road with occasional pot holes and protruding rocks.   I’ve driven it many times in my Honda Civic but then I find that dodging the latest frost heaves is kind of fun.

June    27    #1461    MOXHAM MOUNTAIN HIKE    Diane and Kurt Wisell    796-1993    Back by popular demand! This is a roughly 6 mile round trip hike on a newly opened DEC trail to a mountain located near Minerva NY. There is a cumulative total elevation increase of 1800' to the summit and back. WCMC at 8:45 or meet at the Black Bear Restaurant, Northway Exit 26 at 9:30.

July 11 #13.1462 STEWART'S BRIDGE RESERVOIR PADDLE Kurt Wissel 796-1993 We will paddle on Stewart's Bridge Reservoir which stretches between Stewart's Dam downstream and the Conklingville Dam upstream.  Bald eagles have been observed in the past so bring a camera and binoculars.  Meet at the parking lot across from the Lake Luzerne High School on Rt. 9N at 9:45
**Stewart’s Bridge Reservoir, impounded waters of the Sacandaga River, lies between Stewart’s Dam, Hadley, downstream and the Conklingville Dam, Edinburg, upstream.  Its irregular shoreline lends itself to exploring and the launch area a perfect place for lunch, swimming or just chilling out.  For those of you opting to go directly to the launch site its access is on a marked side-road, on the left, ~4 miles west along CR4/N Shore Rd from the main intersection in the Village of Hadley (near the RR Station).  Continue on the access road to the end at the shore of the reservoir – plenty of parking.

July 18  #1463  STARBUCKSVILLE DAM TO BEAVER POND BIKE Ken Gerike 683-8420 We'll follow the Schroon River north from the Starbucksville Dam (near Rt. 8) to the south end of Schroon Lake, then continue north along the east shore of Schroon Lake to the hamlet of Adirondack. We'll then continue on to idyllic Beaver Pond. We'll return by the reverse route, stopping for lunch at the park in Adirondack with picnic tables and restrooms. Light traffic, mostly flat, 24 miles. Pack a lunch.  WCMC at 9:00 or Starbucksville Bridge at 9:45  MORE

July    25    #1464    LENS LAKE PADDLE    Peter Fedorick    893-2629    Lens Lake is a small lake ~6 miles west of the hamlet of Stony Creek in Warren County.    There is a nice launch area with adequate parking for our group.    Our plan is to explore the lake and its irregular shoreline at a leisurely pace and have lunch at the launch area before returning for more exploring if desired.    Meet at the parking lot across from the Lake Luzerne High School on Rt 9N at 9:15.    Of course you can always plan on stopping at Papa’s Ice Cream Parlor on the way home!
**Meeting at the parking lot across from the Hadley-Luzerne High School is recommended for all except those coming from Warrensburg and points north (in which case I would make arrangements to meet at the Town of Stony Creek offices) – if you are from Warrensburg or points north you already know the back way to Stony Creek.  However, for the adventurous you could also go directly to the launch area – if you are so inclined, email and I will send you directions. #1463   STARBUCKSVILLE DAM TO BEAVER POND BIKE.  Directions to start - I87 to exit 25. Rt. 8 east, cross bridge and make an immediate left onto Watering Tub Road. Continue about 1/2 miles to end of road and turn left. You'll see a bridge ahead. August    1    #13.1465    PILOT KNOB MOUNTAIN RIDGE HIKE    Don McMahon    832-1801    Pilot Knob Mountain overlooks the southeast corner of Lake George. The trailhead is near the north end of Pilot Knob Road immediately before Pilot Knob Marina. Be prepared for a strenuous 5 mile hike with a 1520’ elevation change. A portion of the ascent is not clearly defined, not really a bushwhack but subject to “interpretation.” The views of Lake George along the ridge are frequent, changing and are as or more spectacular than any along the lake. **This is a beautiful ride through some rural valleys of Washington County, NY and Vermont, quite remote with approximately 1/2 of the route on hardpacked dirt roads.  While the route can be pedaled with a touring/ narrow-wheeled bike, a hybrid or even a mountain bike might be more appropriate. There are some hills, with a gradual elevation gain of approx. 700'....then a long well-earned downhill to Sandgate.

September    26    #1473    THREE LAKES AND LUNCH    Karen & Leon    372-8396 (h) or 441-0483 (c)    This will be an ~ 8 mile thru hike, visiting Bennett, Middle and Murphy Lakes of the Wilcox Lake Wild Forest just north of Northville in Fulton County.    We begin at the Creek Road TH in the south, gaining ~600’ in the first 2 miles to a level and then slightly descending trail to the northern TH on Pumpkin Hollow Rd where we spotted vehicles earlier.    Meet at the Northville State Boat Launch on NY 30 at 9:15
**This is the first time that this hike has been offered as a thru hike rather than a hike to Murphy Lake and back.  Much of the trail follows old logging roads which double as snowmobile trails in the winter.  Our intent is to have lunch at the lean-to at Murphy Lake and continue north to the Pumpkin Hollow TH afterwards.  The primary meeting place is the Northville State Boat Launch just north of the bridge in Northville on NY 30 at 9:15; however, if someone would like to volunteer to meet at the Saratoga Springs Train Station at 8 to carpool it would be appreciated.

Whether we go in the new trail from the Ross Pond trailhead or go in via the scout road will depend on whether or not DEC completes the new section of trail before our trip. July 10  #1513  Lens Lake Paddle  Donna and Dana Wescott 623-2584
Lens Lake is a small lake ~6 miles west of the hamlet of Stony Creek in Warren County. Of course you can plan on stopping at the Upriver Café (formerly Papa’s Ice Cream Parlor) on the way home!
**Meeting at the parking lot across from the Hadley-Luzerne High School is recommended for all except those coming from Warrensburg and points north (in which case we would make arrangements to meet at the Town of Stony Creek offices) – if you are from Warrensburg or points north you already know the back way to Stony Creek. However, for the adventurous you could also go directly to the launch area – if you are so inclined, email and we will send you directions.

July 17  #1514  Rich And Harris Lakes Paddle  Tom Gibbs  583-1550
We paddle ~5 miles starting at Rich Lake, traveling eastward, pass through a carry to Belden Pond and another carry to Harris Lake, and traverse Harris Lake which empties into the Hudson River at its east end. WCMC at 8:30 or meet at the Black Bear Restaurant in Pottersville at 9:15.

July 24  #1515  Treadway Mt. Hike/Paddle Combo  Joanne Armstrong  798-3236
We will paddle across Putnam Pond and pick up the trail to Treadway Mt. The hike round-trip is 5 miles with ~1,000 ft. elevation change with super views at the top. People without boats will be transported across the pond by Pete F in his canoe - no charge. WCMC at 8:30 or meet at Northway exit 28 at 9:25.
**The Treadway Mt trail and boat launch are in the Putnam Pond State Campground. People 62 and older are free to enter Putnam Pond.  For people under 62 there is a $6 per car day use fee (if there is at least one senior in the car the whole carload is free so we can rearrange seating before going thru the booth). Also, in the past we had always been waved in as a group, however, on our last visit they required each vehicle to register – thus the reason for an earlier start. The boat launch is safe for all types of boats however; after we cross Putts Pond we will be leaving our boats unattended while we hike. This is a rather remote take-out and we have never had any problems leaving boats unattended. However, for those of you who would like a peace of mind please feel free to bring a cable lock to attach your boat to a tree or someone else’s boat. It is a good practice to hide your paddle. It will be a long day so bring plenty of snacks/water.

NEW OUTING – we have paddled and hiked some from this location but this may be the first official “paddle only” outing of Thirteenth Lake for the CC’s. Thirteenth lake is only two miles long but its shoreline is mostly state owned and gives you a sense of remoteness, surrounded with heavily wooded mountains. From our starting point at the boat launch located on the northern end of the lake, ~150 yards down a wide smooth trail to the water,  we will explore the lake at a leisurely pace, stopping for lunch and a swim at a picturesque picnic spot known as Elizabeth Point before returning to paddle and explore more of the lake. Jabe Pond, southwest of Hague is a very scenic, remote, 151 acre pond with camp sites and islands which can be great lunch spots. In past trips, there have been lots of loons, along with the occasional osprey and eagle. Good trout fishing. Bring your camera, binoculars and a fly rod. Access is via a 2 mile dirt road off Split Rock Road from Route 9N (Lakeshore Drive). The dirt road can be rough but is generally passable with an AWD and there is a parking lot at the beginning of the dirt road so a shuttle can be arranged into the pond.  WCMC*

BONUS   Peter Fedorick's 2014 Fall Foliage Tours (aka P3FT)
Hi everyone,Tomorrow is the first day of autumn and with it begins some of the best time to schedule outdoor activities. The Canes schedule for the last week in September and October includes some nice outings but there are not enough Thursday’s in this short period to take advantage of the most beautiful time of the year in my opinion. For this reason, I am offering several bonus outings. As with most bonus outings, the travel time/distance is typically greater than we normally do and the outings may be slightly more challenging as well. If you do not find any of these offerings to your liking and would like to offer one or more of your own please do not hesitate to schedule on the same dates as mine – all of mine are tentative and will be subject to last minute changes due to weather.
     Saturday, September 27th: Mt. Adams
Canceled last year because the new bridge across the Hudson had not yet been completed – now finished and a dry crossing guaranteed. While the hiking distance is just under 5 miles RT and the first .8 miles is relatively flat the final 1.6 miles to the 3,520’ summit and the renovated fire tower is steep, gaining 1,800’. The trailhead is located near Tahawus and is ~65 miles and ~1.5 hours from the WCMC. For this reason I would like to start early with an 8 AM meeting time at the WCMC for a prompt departure of 8:15. I will send out a reminder/confirmation email later this week and would like an RSVP for those interested. Alternate meeting places may be arranged.
Tuesday, September 30th: Giant's Nubble and Roaring Brook
Giant’s Nubble is a rocky knob off the ridge trail to its namesake, providing a close-up view of Giant Mt to the north and expansive views of the High Peaks to the south and west. This will be a thru hike of ~4 miles beginning at the Chapel Pond trailhead and returning via the Roaring Brook trail. Meet at the WCMC at 8:15 or at the Chapel Pond TH at 10:00. While the total distance may be on the short side the views cause visitors to linger and a leisurely lunch is planned. Total gain on the ascent is ~1350’ over 1.2 miles and total loss on the descent is ~1700’ over 1.5 miles. We will have the opportunity to explore the area beneath Roaring Brook Falls at the end of the hike. Bring a camera! Check out this recent CC trip report.
     Tuesday, October 7th: Jay Mountain
New as a Cane hike this should be a real treat if the weather cooperates. This is a relatively new trail as well, being opened in October of 2012. From the trailhead near Upper Jay the trail will lead us ~4 miles to the summit with spectacular views along the way.The total RT hiking distance is ~8 miles with and ascent of ~2,000’ – combined with ~80 miles drive and ~1.5 hours from the WCMC an early start is mandatory. I would like to meet at the WCMC at 7:45 for a prompt departure of 8. Check out a detailed description.
Tuesday, October 21st: Barton High Cliffs
A bushwhack of ~4 miles RT and ~700’ to some secluded cliffs (slightly understated). The plan is to hike to the top of the cliffs before descending to the valley beneath them and a walk along their base on our return trip. Most of the leaves should be off the trees, allowing for some great views. I haven’t arranged it with them yet but I think this will be a joint effort between Don, Tom and me. TH is located off of NY 8, midway between Brant Lake and Hague. Meet at 9 at the WCMC for a prompt departure of 9:15 with alternate meeting locations depending upon attendees.
So there you have it – some outings to think about. I do not have enough spare time to do any scouts so it will be interesting. I will send out reminders/confirmation emails on all of these outings as their dates get closer so no need to get back to me at this time – except for the September 27th hike to Mt. Adams. Email or call me at 893-2629 if you have any questions.

October 2    #14.1525    New York / Sandgate Vt. Bike    Bob McMahon 581-7354    Tom Gibbs  583-1550
An 18 mile bike beginning at the  SR 313 NY/VT canoe  access on the Battenkill River, and continuing in a clockwise loop to Sandgate Vermont. Lunch will be in the scenic hamlet of Sandgate VT (specific location TBD). The route continues, mostly downhill, returning to SR 313, crossing the Arlington Covered Bridge to East River Rd,  then back to SR 313  and  to our start in NY. Meet at McDonalds in Greenwich at 9:15.

October 23    #1528    CANCELLED  Cat and Thomas Mt. Thru Hike    Peter Fedorick    893-2629
Starting at Edgecomb Pond we hike ~ 2 mi and ~ 900’ gain to the summit of Cat Mt.  The panoramic views of Lake George from the summit make this an ideal lunch spot.  After a leisurely lunch we would return to Edgecomb Pond.   For those that would like to add some adventure to the hike we would delay lunch, selecting a spot on the way, and hike over the ridge to the cabin on Thomas Mt. and continue to the Thomas Mt. parking lot where we spotted cars earlier.  This option would add ~ 2.5 mi and ~ 800’ more of gain for a total of ~6.5 mi.    WCMC* or meet at Northway Exit 24 at 9:50.

Peter has volunteered to meet at WCMC at 8:00 AM with a prompt departure of 8:15 AM. October 30  #1529    Haystack Mountain Hike    Diane and Kurt Wisell    D 796-1993  K 796-5495
Haystack is one of a whole lot of small peaks in the northern Taconics between Wells and Pawlet, Vermont. Along with its closest neighbors, Middle and Bald, the trio are known as the Three Sisters. Haystack has been called the "Gibralter of Vermont" because of its distinctive cliffs and dramatic outcrops of slate and quartzite. From the 1900 ft summit you can see west to Glens Falls, south to Equinox and just to the north is Lake St. Catherine.    This really nice hike is 4 miles RT with ~ 500’ elevation change on a nice trail.  WCMC*

BONUS November 314.   Hennig Preserve   Peter Fedorick
Greetings, How about a change of pace and take away the steep terrain of some of the recent hikes and join Susan Roberts on a nice woods walk on the trails of Saratoga PLAN's Hennig Preserve located in town of Providence. BONUS November 11    Shelburne Farms  Diane & Kurt Wisell   796-5495 or 796-1993
Diane and I will be heading to Shelburne Farms in Shelburne, Vermont this coming Tuesday, November 11 and would love for you to come along. The last time we went our thought was “We’ve got to bring the Crooked Canes here. They’d love it.” A working farm, which became a National Historic Landmark in 1991, Shelburne Farms is located on Shelburne Point on Lake Champlain just west of the village of Shelburne. It is really a very nice place to go and we are eagerly looking forward to enjoying it again, hopefully with you. Don’t confuse this with the Shelburne Museum where, though very nice, we are NOT GOING! Most of the Farm’s amenities are closed this time of year but the walking paths are all open. Some dirt, some gravel and some paved. We plan on a roughly 5 mile circuit taking in the historic – and elegant – buildings, lake shore and other wooded and open areas of the farm. A few short hills but generally rolling, gentle, open terrain. Low comfortable shoes will do just fine. You won’t need to bring much except water and lunch. Depending upon how good the weather is, we may opt to have lunch by the lake (in which case you’ll need your pack, so plan to bring it) or at the parking lot where the nearby lawn is a pretty good place to relax. Meet at WCMC at 8.00 with departure at 8.15. It is a two hour ride to Shelburne and a lot of it is quite scenic. Don’t plan on getting home early and you may want to think about a bite to eat on the way home. PLEASE DO LET US KNOW IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND! The weather for Tuesday presently looks very good: mostly sunny with a high of 54 degrees You can keep an eye on Shelburne’s weather by clicking HERE.
Weather, time, and interest permitting, we may head to Church Street in Burlington and the Gear Exchange later in the day. If the forecast turns lousy, we'll cancel and let you know. The Farm has a very good web site describing their activities, the farm and it’s history. Take a look at the farm's web page HERE. The following is from the History page located in the About Us section of the web site: “In 1886, Dr. William Seward and Lila Vanderbilt Webb began acquiring farmland on the shores of Lake Champlain to create a model agricultural estate. Landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr. created conceptual designs for the landscape. Prominent architect Robert H. Robertson designed four major buildings: The Farm Barn, Breeding Barn, Coach Barn and Shelburne House. By the early 1900s, the Webb’s 3,800-acre farm was renowned for its innovative practices, hackney horse breeding enterprise, and grand family residence.
